Christmas Eve Sacrament Meeting and Message from the Bishopric
Brothers and Sisters,
During this wonderful time of the year we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior of the world. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
What promise and hope this oft quoted scripture shares with us. God loves us so much that He sent Jesus so that we can partake of the joys of the atonement and have everlasting life! As we join our Christian brothers and sisters around the world this weekend, we invite you— wherever you may find yourself, physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally— to “come and see” (John 1:39) and be healed by the love of Jesus. Invite your family, friends, ministering families and neighbors, to our special Christmas Eve Sunday church services at 9:00 am for a special one hour church service, where beautiful messages of Jesus and lovely songs of praise will be shared. There will be no second hour meetings held today.
As a Bishopric we think about each of you often. Your testimony, service, friendship, example, and love inspires us each day. We love you and are excited to be taught Gospel Truths on Christmas Eve by word and music as we worship the Lord Jesus with you.

Thought of the Week
by John A Warnick
Christmas is a season of hope and joy, a time to give and receive love. It is a time when our thoughts turn to the Savior and the significance of His birth – Thomas S. Monson For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself—Charles Dickens, author of A Christmas Carol |
Beloved Brothers and Sisters: Surprise!!! We take a week off from Revelation. We’ll spend this week snuggling with the warm blanket of Christmas. But looking ahead to next week, we’ll finish the year studying Chapters 15-22 of Revelation. I’m grateful for that because it always seems that our study of the New Testament Revelation gets short-shrifted by the rush of year-end.
So how can we maximize the joy that this week’s Come Follow Me study is intended to bring into our family and lives?
I’d love to hear from you with thoughts and suggestions for personal and family activities that will bring us closer to the Savior, and elevate our appreciation for His birth, life and mission.
Nativity Celebrations – For the Empty Nesters, Single Members, and Families with newborns and really young children, consider inviting another family in the ward or within your circle of friends and family to join with you in enacting the Nativity Story. Our children always loved “dressing up” for the Nativity Story. You can get really creative with costuming, props and setting for your Nativity celebration. It could be Christmas Eve, Christmas Day afternoon or why not do it earlier this week. Enjoy your celebration.
Pondering on These Things – The Come Follow Me materials on the Church’s website point out that despite all the attention that the birth of the Savior brought—visits of Angels to Shepherds, a new star to guide Wise Men, presents of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, Mary “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:17-19. Find the luxury of quiet time when you can ponder on these things as well.
Mix It Up – I’m sure you have your favorite Christmas themed DVDs or streaming movie candidates. Our kids always loved watching Home Alone, The Grinch, and A Christmas Story. Plus for the adults there are always a plethora of Hallmark, Lifetime Channel and Great American Network Christmas movies (some of our favorites are the 12 Dates of Christmas and A Shoe Addict’s Christmas). Our kids didn’t enjoy it but Carol and I always loved watching Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life. And speaking of Jimmy Stewart don’t miss watching Mr. Krueger’s Christmas. It was produced by the Church, only takes about 25 minutes, and if it doesn’t put you in a wonderful Christmas Spirit I don’t know what well. Point here is why don’t you mix things up this week. Spend quality time watching both fun and more serious Christmas themed movies.
Dickens, Dickens and More Dickens – The quote above is just one small contribution Charles Dickens has made to the “modern” celebration of Christmas. Consider reading A Christmas Carol. You can get a replica copy of the first edition copy of A Christmas Carol, with its early 19th century illustrations, for about 20 bucks. I ordered it early last week and we plan on reading it with our grandchildren. We also are going to invite our children to watch A Christmas Carol movie. Lots of versions to choose from but I prefer the George C. Scott 1984 version. And, for a change of pace consider watching The Man Who Invented Christmas (2016). It tells the story of how Dickens was led to write A Christmas Carol. It’s almost as transformative as the story itself.
Let me close by offering a list of Scriptures which you’ll want to read as part of your Come Follow Me study this week: Matthew 1:18–25; 2:1–12; Luke 1:26–38; 2:1–20 and some quotes from talks from past Church Christmas Devotionals and Ensign articles that are really uplifting: “Christmas is not only a celebration of how Jesus came into the world but also of knowing who He is—our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ—and of why He came” (Craig C. Christensen, “The Fulness of the Story of Christmas” [First Presidency Christmas devotional, Dec. 4, 2016], and Pres. Hinckley insightful comment “The babe Jesus of Bethlehem would be but another baby without the redeeming Christ of Gethsemane and Calvary, and the triumphal fact of the Resurrection” (“The Wondrous and True Story of Christmas” Ensign, Dec. 2000, 5).
