If you would like to write a “thought of the week” please send it to Michael Cox early in the week or post it in the Gospel Living app. Read the Current Thought of the Week.

Thought of the Week
by Michael H Cox
Brothers and Sisters,
Today is the last day of 2023, and, therefore, tomorrow is the first day of 2024. This time of year we like to reflect on the past year, find things we can improve, and resolve how to be better. I hope that each of us considers in our resolutions how to be better disciples of Jesus Christ. Earlier this month during Come, Follow Me we read in Revelation 12:11 “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” We can overcome temptation because of the atonement of Jesus Christ and by the power of our testimony. In this weeks Come, Follow Me reading includes Revelation 20:2-3 where we learn that Satan will be bound for 1,000 years. Turning to 1st Nephi 22:26 we learn that Satan will be bound because of “the righteousness of [the] people”. Today we have the opportunity to bear testimony of Jesus Christ in Fast and Testimony meeting and we should all strive each day to bind Satan because of our righteousness. When we all fall short, repent and try harder. Don’t beat yourself up when you stumble, which we all do. Yesterday, my nephew had a small accident with something he was borrowing from me. He kept apologizing to me, and I kept telling him it was an accident and not to beat himself up. He, like all of us, was trying and I believe that God appreciates effort. The commandment is “be ye therefore perfect” (Matthew 5:48) will happen “somewhere in eternity” as Elder Jeffrey R. Holland stated in the October 2017 General Conference. It won’t happen today, or even tomorrow. So let us make resolutions to be better and make an effort. President Nelson has said “the Lord loves effort” (see video presented during Joy D. Jones April 2020 General Conference address) and we know that God loves us. We are the children of a Perfect Heavenly Father and He wants us to become more like Him. As we do that “God shall wipe away all tears from [our] eyes” (Revelation 21:4) and welcome us into His home where we “shall inherit all things” (Revelation 21:7).
