If you would like to write a “thought of the week” please send it to Michael Cox early in the week or post it in the Gospel Living app. Read the Current Thought of the Week.

Thought of the Week

By Michael H Cox

Last week we were spiritually feed by listening to the words of Jesus delivered by His authorized servants in General Conference. There were great messages shared. An overarching theme of the conference seemed to revolve around the importance of covenants. This ties in nicely with this weeks Come, Follow Me, where we read Jacob chapters 5-7. In chapter 5 we read about Zenos’ allegory of the tame and wild olive trees. A verse of scripture that really spoke to me this week was chapter 5 verse 33 which reads:

“And the Lord of the vineyard said unto the servant: What shall we do unto the tree, that I may preserve again good fruit thereof unto mine own self?”

The Lord of the vineyard represents Jesus.
The servant represents us, all those who have entered into a covenant relationship with Him. As we enter into covenants, we covenant to love God and to love our neighbor as ourself. As we love our neighbor we want to share the happiness we feel by entering into covenants with God and living the covenants we have made.

The olive tree represents the gospel and these covenants.

The fruit of the olive tree also represents us.

In chapter 5 despite all the efforts of the Lord and His servants, the people who had entered into covenants, fail into wickedness and fall away from their covenant relationship.

In verse 33 the Lord asks the servant “what shall we do”.

At times God invites us to lead, take initiative, or suggest the course of action in His mission of saving souls. He doesn’t do this because He doesn’t know what to do or because He is out of ideas. It is to allow us to grow – to “study it out in our minds” and to learn how to be more like Him.

I am fond of saying “if you don’t feel as close to God today as you did yesterday… who moved?”

The reverse is also true “if you feel closer to God today than you did yesterday… who moved?”

I invite all of us this week to think of our covenants and how we can better live up to them. When we fall short, let us repent quickly and try a little harder tomorrow. Let us also consider the question “what shall we do” to help others come closer to Jesus.

As we live up to our covenants and invite others to learn more about Jesus and enter into a covenant relationship with Him we all will move closer to God.
