Thought of the Week
A new feature we are starting is a weekly “thought of the week” that goes along with this weeks “Come, Follow Me”. The plan is to post these a few days ahead of time in the Adults circle of the Gospel Living app and then post them in the bulletin. We’d love to have many different people help with this. If you would like to write a “thought of the week” please send it to Michael Cox early in the week or post it in the Gospel Living app. Read the Current Thought of the Week.

Thought of the Week
By Michael H Cox
This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying Mosiah chapters 1-3. An interesting side note – it appears that our modern Mosiah chapter 1 was actually chapter 3 on the Gold Plates. This means that it appears that Mosiah chapters 1 and 2 were among the “Book of Lehi” lost by Martin Harris. Some of the evidence for this is that Mosiah doesn’t include an introduction as all the other abridged books from the Large Plates have, is not named after the opening principal character of the book as all the other abridged books are, and on the Printer’s Manuscript “Chapter 3” is listed but then the 3 is crossed out and replaced with 1.
(from page 117 of the Printer’s Manuscript, on the Joseph Smith Papers website).
King Benjamin’s discourse in these chapters are worth in-depth study by all students of gospel truth. I will only mention one item – the importance of preserving and studying records.
If we read Mosiah 1:3,4 and 7 we learn that Benjamin taught his sons from the scriptures contained on the Brass Plates and then told them that if it wasn’t for these plates they would have suffered in ignorance because they didn’t know the “mysteries of God”. This verse reminds me of 1 Nephi 1:1 where Nephi tells us that he was born of “goodly parents” because they taught him so that he had a “knowledge of the goodness and… mysteries of God”.
Benjamin goes on to explain that if wasn’t for the scriptures contained on the Brass Plates father Lehi would have been able to remember everything he needed to know about God without the scripture records. This would have caused the people to “dwindle in unbelief” without the scriptures, which remind me of when the spirit told Nephi that “it is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief” and Nephi understanding that his people “could not keep the commandments of the Lord… [unless] they have the law” which was in the scripture record found in the plates of brass, found in 1 Nephi 4:13-16.
Benjamin then tells his children to “search [the scriptures] diligently, that [they] may profit… and… keep the commandments of God that [they] may prosper in the land.”
The scripture record keepers throughout the Bible and the Book of Mormon labored much so that later generations can have a knowledge of God, His mysteries, and His commandments so that these later generations can know, understand, and follow the covenant path. I hope that we will follow this counsel of King Benjamin to not just read the scriptures but to diligently search the scriptures. We are blessed in a day and age when we have the entire standard works and 50+ years of words of modern prophets and apostles in our pockets. Let us daily immerse ourselves in the scriptures and the words of the prophets so that we may profit and prosper as we come closer to Jesus Christ.
