Thought of the Week
by Michael H. Cox
Hello Little Valley neighbors and friends,
This week for Come, Follow Me, we are studying Alma 43-52. These chapters have a lot going on. This is also the beginning of the “war chapters” of The Book of Mormon where we read about one ancient war after another. Sometimes people wonder why Mormon spent so much time on wars in his book designed “to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ” (Title page of the Book of Mormon). In Alma 46:8 Mormon writes “thus we see how quick the children of men do forget the Lord their God, yea, how quick to do iniquity, and to be led away by the evil one.” During the War Chapters the Nephites forgot the Lord and were nearly destroyed by the Lamanites because of the iniquities of the Nephites. Sometimes they remembered Him and His blessings were upon them. In Mormon’s day, the Nephites forgot the Lord and were completely destroyed because they refused to repent. This is a warning for our day – remember God and be blessed or forget God and be cut off. I hope and pray that all of us will remember that Jesus is the Christ and do all we can to be led by Him as we live our daily life by praying often, studying His words daily, give meaningful service to those around us, and attend our Church meetings and the temple in a humble way so that His spirit can teach and heal us. It is only in and through Jesus that we can return to our Heavenly home.
