Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

Hello Little Valley brothers and sisters,

This week for Come, Follow Me we are finishing our study of Alma in 53-63. There is so much going on in these chapters. One of the best known stories is that of the Stripling Warriors. These young men are children of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies or people of Ammon who were converted through the preachings of the Sons of Mosiah. I wanted to focus on 2 thoughts that I had about these brave and faithful youth as I read this week.

First in Alma 56:48 the Stripling Warriors told “We do not doubt our mothers knew it”. These young adults relied on their testimony of their mothers until they gained their own. In Doctrine and Covenants 46:14 we learn that one of the gifts of the sprint is “to believe on their words, that they also might have eternal life if they continue faithful.” Elder Ronald A. Rasband taught in a September 2020 Face to Face worldwide young adult broadcast “Our young friends, we’re all in a different pathway with that testimony,” he continued. “Some of us have those burning testimonies. Others of us are believing on the testimony of others, and that’s OK. You can believe on ours. … Don’t be discouraged if you find yourself having to believe on the testimony of others. That in and of itself is a gift.” Because of this gift of the spirit these young Ammonites were blessed. We can each be blessed as we relay on and share with others the spirit gifts given to us by Jesus.

Second to go back a verse to Alma 56:47 Helman tells Capitan Moroni what motivated the stripling warriors: “they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.”  Put another way the things that are worth remembering and worth fighting and dying for is family, liberty and religion/God. Does this sound familiar? This is what Capitan Moroni wrote on the Title of Liberty in Alma 46:12. The Nephites were placing the Title of Liberty in each of these cities with the words “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children”. Their example caused them to become a living Title of Liberty, serving as a remembrance and example of the things worth fighting for to the rest of the Nephite armies.

My brothers and sisters what are you willing to fight for in your life? What spiritual gifts have you identified in your life? How can you use these gifts to help you and others closer to Jesus.
