Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying Alma 36-38. In these chapters Alma teaching two of his sons, Helaman and Shiblon, after their mostly unsuccessful mission to the apostate Zoramites. They had embarqed on this mission in an attempt to prevent the Zoramites from allying with the Lamanites and starting a war among the Nephites. While they had a few converts from the Zoramites ultimately the Zoramites aligned with the Lamanites and started a bloody war among the Nephites. Alma decides this is the time to pass along the records and the charge to keep a record of the people to Helaman. He then tells Helaman to “counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good” (Alma 37:37). As we strive to counsel daily with the Lord He will direct us. Counsel is more than just a quick one way prayer to God. This involves talking with Him and giving Him a chance to answer. How might that answer come? It could be through thoughts and feelings during that prayer, it could be found as we are diligently  studying His words in the scriptures and in General Conference addresses, it could be found as we are giving and receiving meaningful service, or in quiet moments as we ponder His goodness, grace, and mercy. As Alma taught his son Shiblon “there is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ” (Alma 38:9).

Let us strive today counsel with God. As we do so, He will direct us to do good for those around us. Let us seek Him in the scriptures and through service to others. This could be a “small and simple” (Alma 37:6) change that can cause an increase in blessings in our life and the life of our families.
