Thought of the Week
by Michael Cox
Hello Little Valley neighbors,
This week for Come, Follow Me we are reading 1-3 John and Jude. These shorts letters focus on the importance of loving God and loving each other. The authors also warn of various false doctrine that had entered the Church in their day and we can see happening in our day. In addition, John describes God as being love “God is love”. This is an essential characteristic of God. Without love you wouldn’t have God. The invitation from Jesus is for us to become more like Him and like our Father in Heaven. This means that we need to make love an essential characteristic of us.
When asked what the greatest commandment was Jesus gave His famous answer in Mark 12:28-31 to love God and our neighbor as ourself.
Elder Dieter F. Uchtorf taught that “Because love is the great commandment, it ought to be at the center of all and everything we do in our own family, in our Church callings, and in our livelihood…. [and] Since “God is Love” the closer we approach Him, the more profoundly we experience love” (October 2009 General Conference “The Love of God”).
I invite each of us to try each day to love those around us the way God and Jesus love them, even the people who cut us off on the road or drive slow in the left lane and those who we really don’t like. As we strive to find ways to love everyone around us and make love part of our identity, we will be happier and we will come closer to Jesus and God.
Also to help each of us keep remember Jesus during the busy Christmas season – I invite each of consider using this December reading calendar that gives a daily scripture reading about Jesus.
