If you would like to write a “thought of the week” please send it to Michael Cox early in the week or post it in the Gospel Living app. Read the Current Thought of the Week.

Thought of the Week
by Michael H Cox
Good morning brothers and sisters. This week for Come, Follow Me we have started reading in 2nd Nephi. 1st Nephi is a journey of a people from where they were to were God wants them to be. During their journey there were time when they felt closer to God and further from God. There were times when they were better at following God’s commandments and time when they were lax at following His commandments. There were times when there were great visions and revelations and times when heaven felt far away. During this journey when they messed up, they repented and got back on the journey. Finally they arrived at their promised land. My dear brothers and sisters – 1st Nephi is a parallel to all of our lives. We are invited to leave the wickedness of the world and travel to our own land of promise, where we can be “heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17) in the celestial kingdom of God. Just like the Lehites had to repent when they made mistakes, so to must we repent when we mess up.
This leads us into 2nd Nephi where the patriarch of this group, Lehi, is close to death. He gathers his family together and tells them the things that are most important to him. There is great council and teachings, as well as blessings and warnings, that Lehi gives them. A verse that I want us all to think about and try to adopt into our lives is 2 Nephi 1:20, which reads “And he hath said that: Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; but inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence.”
The promise of this verse is repeated at least 19 times in the Book of Mormon and applies to us – if we follow the commandments we will prosper. If we don’t follow the commandments, we will be cutoff. Lehi setup “prosper in the land” and “cut off from [God’s] presence” as opposites from each other.
What does it mean that we will prosper? Does that mean that if we keep the commandments, we’ll become rich as to the things of the world? Doctrine and Covenants 6:7 teaches “he that hath eternal life is rich.” We will prosper, we will be rich, if we keep the commandments – we will be able to stay in the presence of God and, ultimately, gain eternal life. If we rebel, eventually we’ll chose to cut ourselves off from God. In 1st Nephi, as long as they were trying to stay close to God, they could repent when they messed up. However, in the beginning chapters of 2nd Nephi, those who decided to follow Laman and Lemuel finally got to the point where they stopped trying and they cut themselves off from God.
My hope and prayer is that all of us will continue to try to stay on the Covenant Path that will return us home to our Heavenly Father and His son, the Lord Jesus Christ. When we make mistakes, which we will all do, that we will realize what we have done, repent, and return so that Jesus Christ, through His grace and mercy, can heal us.
