Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

Hello neighbors and friends,

Today in Sacrament Meeting we are privileged to hear from four men in our Ward who are leaving behind their family, friends, career, education, and all other endeavors to service the Lord Jesus as full time missionaries to proclaim His message of peace and salvation to all who will hear their voice. As we have been reading the last couple of weeks in the Come, Follow Me lesson we learn about four brothers who went with others to preach to their enemies.  One of these brothers, Ammon, recounted that their people told them “do ye suppose that ye can bring the Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth?… Let us take up arms against them, that we destroy them and their iniquity out of the land, lest they overrun us and destroy us.” (Alma 26:24-25). The people had given up hope that the wicked Lamanites could ever feel of God’s love and thought they should just be killed to end wickedness in the land. These four men and their friends, however, had a better view. They, instead of coming to them “with the intent to destroy [their] brethren, but with the intent that perhaps [they] might save some few of their souls.” (Alma 26:26).

Because of the love of Ammon and his brothers and the example and service they provided, thousands of Lamanites were eventually converted to the Lord Jesus. That doesn’t mean it was always easy but as they persisted their trials they were ever give see these Lamanites change their lives and these missionaries were able to “give thanks unto… God forever” (Alma 26:37).

As these four men and all the other missionaries from our Ward and around the world are teaching, serving, and loving their fellow men with the same intent of “perhaps [they] might save some few of their souls” and “give thanks unto… God forever” it will be amazing to see the results. As Paul mentioned in his epistle to the saints at Corinth “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” (1 Corinthians 3:5). Those who hear the words of the missionaries are hearing the voice of Jesus and their conversation came from and belongs to God. Let us each strive each day to live our lives so that we can be the best version of ourselves so that our love and example will cause people to want to know Jesus because they know us.
