Thought of the Week
by Michael H. Cox
Hello Little Valley Ward friends and neighbors,
This week for Come, Follow Me we are reading Alma 30-31. In these chapters we read about Korihor, a man who taught there would be no messiah nor atonement and about a man named Zoram, who lead his followers to worship idols. While the exact teachings and manner of worship may feel unfamiliar in our 2024 worlds the way they teach and the ultimate purpose of their teachings is very familiar. Korihor, for example called the people “foolish” (Alma 30:13), their recorded prophecies “foolish traditions of your fathers” (Alma 30:14), that “no man can know of anything which is to come” (Alma 30:13), the belief of a remission of sins was “the effect of a frenzied mind… which lead you away into a belief of things which are not so” (Alma 30:16), and “whatsoever a man did was no crime” (Alma 30:19). Similar phrases are used every day by the secular unbelievers today. In Alma’s day and our day, these teachings and beliefs are simply wrong. God lives. He created the heavens and the earth for us. Because of the fall of Adam sin and death entered the world. To overcome sin and death the plan of salvation was introduced by which the Lord Jesus of Nazareth came into the world, lived a perfect life, and paid for all of our sins through His great atonement in the garden of Gethsemane and on the cross of Calvary. From the oldest written book of the Bible, the Book of Job, to the most recently added scripture, Doctrine and Covenants section 138, the importance of the creation and the redemption of man by the Messiah are clearly taught. Job said “For I know that my redeemer liveth” (Job 19:25). As Alma taught Korihor “all things denote there is a God… even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it… do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.” (Alma 30:44). This week, let’s take time to reflect upon this beautiful earth that was created for us by a loving God and that, in His wisdom, He sent His Son Jesus the Redeemer “that whosever believe to in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
