Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

Hello Little Valley Ward friends and neighbors,

This week for Come, Follow Me we are reading Alma 32-35. In these chapters Alma is continuing to teach the Zoramites in Antionum. As we know from our study of Jesus and His gospel we must have faith to improve our relationship with our Creator. As the author of Hebrews wrote “without faith it is impossible to please him” (Hebrews 11:6). Alma, in his attempt to find those who were humble enough to be willing to start to exercise faith, had a group of people as him one of the best questions in all of scripture, one that other humble seekers of truth have asked throughout the scriptures and all of time. “What shall we do?” (Alma 32:5. See also Acts 2:37; Luke 3:10, 12; John 6:28). Gospel teachers will attempt to liken familiar concepts to eternal gospel truths to help listens be able to understand and answer this great question “what shall we do”. Alma compared the word of God unto a seed and how the people could know a seed was a good seed if it began to grow. He likely used this as a teaching method because the people in and around Antionum had an agricultural background. We see gospel teachers today use familiar topics to help us understand gospel truths because “all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.” (Alma 30:44). We can see God in everything. For example, as many of you know I have my private pilot certificate. When I’m flying with people I’ll often times try to take a few minutes to compare various aspects of flying to gospel truths. When I do this I feel like this helps my passengers understand the particular truth I am trying to convey. As we are sharing the messages of the restored gospel of Jesus to our family and friends are there ways we can find to help them understand by applying to things they understand in their life? If so we should try to use them to gain greater faith. As Alma taught these people “faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true” (Alma 32:21). Let us try to day to increase our faith and the faith of those around us by finding and acknowledging God in all we do see and do. As our faith in God increases we will have a desire to repent, join or rejoin and stay on the covenant path and become more like Jesus, who is our perfect example and the our redeemer.
