Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

Hello Little Valley Ward Members,

This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying Alma chapters 17-22. These well known chapters discuss the teachings about Ammon, Aaron, and their brothers, to the Lamanites, featuring the conversion of King Lamoni and his household, as well as the conversion of his father and his household to the Lord Jesus. Much has been said about these conversions and the impact they have on Nephite culture for many years. I’m sure there is nothing I can say today that hasn’t already been said. That being said I want to focus for a moment on the servants of King Lamoni. We are first introduced to them in chapter 17:26 when Ammon and the Lamanitish servants were watering the flocks of Lamoni at the waters of Sebus. When Lamanite robbers came to scatter the flocks the other servants became fearful for their lives (see Alma 17:28-29). Ammon, having already learned to love these fellow servants and viewed them as his brothers (see Alma 17:29-30) saw an opportunity to “lead them to believe” (Alma 17:30) in Jesus had them go gather the flocks and then stand around them in a circle so they would stay there. Ammon then defended the flocks and the servants when the robbers came again (see Alma 17:31-38). This, however, is not the end of their story. The servants then gathered the arms that Ammon had cut off and took them to the king and told them what had happened (see Alma 17:39, 18:1-11). They were there when Ammon taught Lamoni and saw when he “fell unto the earth” (see Alma 18:12-42). They were the ones who then carried the seemingly dead Lamoni to his wife the queen and laid him on his bed (see Alma 18:43), telling the queen that Ammon was “a prophet of a holy prophet and that [he had] power to do many mighty works in [God’s] name” (see Alma 19:4). The servants where there when she had Ammon come in and listen to their conversation (see Alma 19:3-10), saw the king arise after 3-days of being asleep and heard Lamoni speaking to the queen, and both of them falling down before the Lord again (see Alma 19:12-13) as well as Ammon also falling down before the Lord (see Alma 19:14). The servants, thinking about all they had seen and heard “began to cry unto God” (Alma 19:15) and all, but one (Abish) all fell to the earth. Abish then runs house to house telling everyone of this miraculous event that has happened (see Alma 19:15-17). The people begin to argue about what is happening, but the king, his household, and all the servants “were converted unto the Lord” (Alma 19:31) and “did all declare unto the people the selfsame thing—that their hearts had been changed; that they had no more desire to do evil” (Alma 19:33). I hope that all of us can say the same thing in our life – that we have been converted unto the Lord and that our hearts have been changed and that we have no more desire to do evil. Note however that these people didn’t say that they “no more did evil” or sin. Rather they had no more *desire* to do evil. In our life as we are converted to Jesus and stay on His covenant path to God we won’t be perfect but as we strive to have a desire to follow Him we can, like these servants, testify of the things we have seen and heard and help others learn of Jesus as we strive each day to follow Him.
