Thought of the Week
by Michael H. Cox
Hello Brothers and Sisters. This week for Come, Follow Me, we are studying Alma chapters 5-7. In these chapters, Alma, having stepped down from the judgement seat, begins traveling around teaching about Jesus in cities and villages through the land.
As I was studying Alma 5:45-46 stood out and I’ve reflected upon it a lot this week.
Alma the Younger, as we know, was “the very vilest sinners” (Mosiah 28:4) because he actively tried to destroy the church and bring people away from Jesus. An angel came and taught him (see Mosiah 27:11-17) and Alma ultimately becomes a great leader in the church.
When Alma recounts his conversation in Alma 5:45-46, notice what he says… or rather what he doesn’t say.
“Do ye not suppose that I know of these things myself? Behold, I testify unto you that I do know that these things whereof I have spoken are true. And how do ye suppose that I know of their surety? Behold, I say unto you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I do know of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by his Holy Spirit”
He knew that teachings of Jesus not from an angel nor did he know about the plan of salvation from an angel. He knew them by “the Holy Spirit” after “fast[ing] and pray[ing] many days”.
Just seeing an angel didn’t convert Alma. We are converted as God’s spirit communicates with our spirit when we ask in faith. This causes a change of heart for us as we strive to become more like Jesus. I hope and pray we will strive to allow the holy spirit to touch our hearts and lead us to become better people who try to love and serve God and our fellow man.
