Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

Hello Little Valley Ward Members,

This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying Alma 8-12. There is much we could discuss about these chapters however I will only focus on one topic – diligence. After having success in teaching the people about Jesus in Zarahelma (chapters 5-6), Gideon (chapters 6-7), and Melek (chapter 7), Alma goes to Ammonihah (chapter 8-14) where the people completely reject Alma’s message of salvation through the grace of Jesus. Alma leaves the city with no plan of ever returning (8:24) when an angel of God comes and tells him to return to the city to continue preaching (8:15-17). What does Alma do? Does he sit around and try to decide if he’s going to obey? Does he try to determine what he is going to do? Does he sit around until the time is just perfect? Does he go and eat first? Chapter 8:18 tells us that “after Alma had received his message… he returned speedily to the land of Ammonihah”. He faithfully and immediately obeys. He meets Amulek and gains a trusted friend and fellow laborer who gives up everything for the message of Jesus. Together they preach together and, while they see some success, they have many more setbacks.

Following the commandments isn’t always easy. There are times when it will feel easier to just give up, or to take our time in following the commandments, or to give a half hearted attempt at following. But if we can follow the example of Alma in Ammonihah to continue to be faithful even when it is tough that is when God can use us to become the son and daughter that He wants us to be. A popular Latter-day Saint hymn begins with the line I Believe in Christ. Let us be diligent so that Christ can believe in us – believe that when He asks us to do something He knows that we will do it.
