Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

Hello Little Valley Ward Members,

This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying Alma 13-16 where we finish our reading the teaching of Alma and Amulek in the land of Ammonihah. Many of those who believed in this city ended up becoming martyrs for Jesus because of their faith. After being forced to watch the horrible martyrdom of those whom they had served, Alma and Amulek then travel to Sidom and then Zarahemla. The Nephites had several years of relative peace which ended when the Lamanites attack and destroy the city (along with it unbeliever residents who killed the believers) in Ammonihah. There were many prisoners taken captive by the Lamanites. The Nephites, of course, want to free the prisoners. In Alma 16:5-6 the Nephite military Chief Captain Zoram, having faith in Jesus, asks Alma the High Priest what they should do to free the captives. Alma in turn asks the Lord. How does this apply to us? When we are slaves to our sins, to our weaknesses, to our addictions, to our desires we can, like Zoram, turn in faith to the Lord and ask Him for help to be freed. We have a High Priest in our Ward, Bishop Andrus, who can help us as Alma did Zoram. We live in a most remarkable time when we have the power of the scriptures and words of Latter-day prophets in our hands everyday. I hope that we remember the desire of Moses who, in Numbers 11:29 said “would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!” There has likely never been a day when so many of the people on the earth who holds God’s priesthood and so many who have received the gift of the Holy Ghost. We can, like Zoram, turn to God in times of need and gain the gift of knowledge from Him. Many times these answers from God will be found in the scriptures and the words of the prophets and apostles. It is my hope that we take advantage of the technology in which the Lord has blessed us with. In our time of need as we pray we will also see others around us who act on God’s behalf. I also hope that each of us can live our lives so that we can act on God’s behalf for those around us in their times of need.
