Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying about Mosiah changes the people from having a king rule over them to having judges govern “by the voice of the people”. Sometimes in our 21st Century American lens we see the “rein of the judges” as something akin to a democracy. As we read closer, however, I think its more like the principal of “common consent”. Mosiah2 appointed Alma2 to be the Chief Judge and Alma2 was accepted or sustained by the voice of the people, similar to when we sustain people into callings at Church. We see later in Alma 4:16-17 that Alma “selected a wise man… and gave him power according to the voice of the people” to be the new Chief Judge when Alma stepped down to focus on just being the High Priest of the Church.

Over the next several chapters we the read about wicked people who establish priestcraft, try to abolish the Judges and create a new Monarch, a war with these “kingmen” and the Lamanites, and then how the members of the church become prideful.

There is much that we could focus on in these chapters but the main point that I want us to consider today is how quickly and easily the people of Zarahelma forgot the lessons of King Mosiah and desired a king and to stop serving the people around them.

Our faith in Jesus matters and we need to try to become more like Him. We won’t be perfect, but because of Him we can become closer to Him and His atonement will heal us. It is my prayer that we will all today try to be a little better and a try a little harder to be a little more like Jesus of Nazareth.
