Thought of the Week
A new feature we are starting is a weekly “thought of the week” that goes along with this weeks “Come, Follow Me”. The plan is to post these a few days ahead of time in the Adults circle of the Gospel Living app and then post them in the bulletin. We’d love to have many different people help with this. If you would like to write a “thought of the week” please send it to Michael Cox early in the week or post it in the Gospel Living app. Read the Current Thought of the Week.

Thought of the Week
by Michael Cox
This week from Come, Follow Me, we are reading 2 Nephi 11-19.
Chapter 11 serves as a bridge from Jacob’s sermon to Nephi quoting Isaiah chapters 2-14 in 2 Nephi 12-24.
Nephi refers to 5 things that his soul delights in.
Let’s read 2 Nephi 11:2,4-6 and identify them.
- The words of Isaiah
- The truth of the coming of Christ
- The covenants of the Lord
- The grace, justice, power, and mercy of God
- “proving” that if Christ doesn’t come everyone must perish.
Why did Nephi, Jacob, and others quote so much from Isaiah? At least in part, 2 Nephi 12:8 and 1 Nephi 19:23 tells us why Isaiah is quoted so much in the Book of Mormon. Approximately 1/3 of Isaiah is quoted directly or by paraphrasing in the Book of Mormon. The largest consecutive section is what is found in 2 Nephi 12-24.
In Gospel Doctrine today I’ll be showing a chart I’m calling “Isaiah in the Book of Mormon”. It is available here to download if anyone wants a copy.
As we study the words of Isaiah, we’ll come closer to Jesus, better understand His premortal, mortal, and post mortal mission, especially His great atoning sacrifice in Gethsemane and on the gross at Calvary. God is good and He wants us to come closer to Him. As we strive “walk in the Light of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:5/2 Nephi 12:5) we will find Jesus there to help us when we are weak, when we are tired, and when we just want to give us, because He knows us and wants us to return to live with Him and our Heavenly Father.
