Thought of the Week
A new feature we are starting is a weekly “thought of the week” that goes along with this weeks “Come, Follow Me”. The plan is to post these a few days ahead of time in the Adults circle of the Gospel Living app and then post them in the bulletin. We’d love to have many different people help with this. If you would like to write a “thought of the week” please send it to Michael Cox early in the week or post it in the Gospel Living app. Read the Current Thought of the Week.

Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

For Come, Follow Me this week we are reading Mosiah 18-24. In these chapters we read about Alma, the only convert that Abinadi had. We don’t even know for sure if Abinadi knew that Alma believed his message about Jesus and the change it caused in Alma’s life. Alma’s trajectory change had huge effects on the Nephite and Lamanite people for the next several hundred years, because of Abinadi’s preaching of Jesus. We don’t know the effects we’ll have on our family, friends, neighbors, community and the world as we stay on the covenant path and invite others to learn of Jesus.
After Alma was converted he started teaching others and eventually fled and he and this small community of believers founded a town.
King Noah died and Limhi became the king. Because of wickedness, God stopped blessing Limhi’s people and so they ended up put in bondage.
Despite being righteous, Alma’s people ended up in bondage. Mosiah 23:21 says that “the Lord seeth fit… [to] trieth their patience and their faith”. During their bondage the voice of the Lord came to them in Mosiah 24:13-14. I immediately thought of Matthew 11:28-30 and in my scriptures I linked these verses together.
As we compare these two groups of people – one ended up in bondage because of wickedness and one ended up in bondage despite being righteous. While it doesn’t actually answer the question it does point out that God doesn’t always protect His people who are trying their best However God allowed them and us to be afflicted. As His people turned to Him, He will make our burdens light. This allows us to stand as a witness of Jesus.
Only God could free Alma’s people. In our lives there can be times when we feel like we are in bondage. This could be in our families, our careers, our retirement savings, our faith, our educational pursuits, and so many other examples. We may not feel like praying, or that when we pray they aren’t reaching past the ceiling of our bedrooms. We may feel that despite our best efforts we aren’t accomplishing those things we feel like we need to, that we aren’t progressing. It could be that we aren’t staying as close to God as we should, like Limhi’s people. It could be that God is trying our patience and our faith, like Alma’s people. It could be many reasons. But what I can tell you is that God loves you. Individually. He knows each of us, better than we know ourselves. And, after knowing us, even during the times in our lives when we may not feel lovable, He still loves us. He wants us to succeed and return and live with Him again. Try your best. God appreciates effort. Try a little harder today than you did yesterday. God will bless your efforts and He will heal each of us. Let us Come unto Jesus and He will give us rest and will make our burdens light.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
