The plan is to post these a few days ahead of time in the Adults circle of the Gospel Living app and then post them in the bulletin. We’d love to have many different people help with this. If you would like to write a “thought of the week” please send it to Michael Cox early in the week or post it in the Gospel Living app. Read the Current Thought of the Week.

Thought of the Week

“In the Strength of the Lord”

May 6-12

As we pursue the Come Follow Me lesson plan for this coming week we are studying chapters 7-10 in the Book of Mosiah.  The Church’s outline for this week’s lesson stresses five key themes: Jesus Christ as our Deliverer; We are Created After the Image of God; The Lord Provides Prophets, Seers and Revelators; We Can Face Challenges in the Strength of the Lord; and Our Choices Can Influence Generations.

All of these themes are packed with power to uplift us.  I hope we all are filled with immense gratitude over the kindness and mercy of Our Lord and Savior.  His influence is Endless and Eternal.

I’d like to share a concept and story tied to the final theme: Our Choices Can Influence Generations.

I’ve been researching and writing a chapter in my book The Gift of You which is centered around “The Gift of Forgiveness.” My research has led me to a concept which social scientists are just beginning to discover.  I find it interesting that social science is catching up with something  Our Creator knew long before the earth was formed.  This concept is called Intergenerational Wholeness and it focuses on the multi-generational impact of emotional and physical trauma (poor choices).  God has warned both Old Testament and Book of Mormon prophets that he visits the iniquities (poor choices) of the fathers unto the third and fourth generations.

There are many poor choices parents make which potentially will be spiritually harmful to their posterity.  Here’s a story told by Elder John Groberg about a Hawaiian father who made a difficult but important choice when it would have been so easy to make a poor choice:

In the early 1900s, a Hawaiian family joined the Church.  The father was serving faithfully in the priesthood and looked forward to the day when the new Temple at Laie would be completed.  Then his daughter was taken to the hospital suffering from a mysterious illness.  Among the Hawaiian people at that time there was grave concerns over mystery illnesses.  As the sacrament hymn concluded, the father knelt to bless the sacrament.  All of a sudden, the branch president realized who was at the sacrament table and exclaimed: “Stop.  You cannot touch the sacrament.  Your daughter is ill and you may get the rest of us sick. Leave immediately.  We can’t have you here.  Go!” The father led his family home in silence.  His son, who related the story to Elder Groberg, said he saw his father’s fists were clutched tightly and he wondered if his father was planning to kill the branch president’s pigs, burn down his home, or forbid his family returning to the Church. After a half hour of silence, tears started to roll down the father’s cheeks and he declared: “Please listen carefully. This is not the branch president’s church. It is the church of Jesus Christ.  We will not let any man or any amount of hurt or embarrassment or pride keep us from staying actively involved in God’s kingdom.  Next Sunday, we will go back to church.  We will sit by ourselves until the illness is known.  We will let other people look at us however they will and say whatever they want.”  They did return.  His children remained strong in the gospel.

There are so many ways that Satan can trip up parenting.  He will try to tempt our children.  But he knows if he can separate us from God and His Kingdom the children will be within his grasp as well.

As you contemplate this week’s lesson, please think about how your choices will impact the lives of your children and future posterity.  Remember God’s instructions to ancient Israel in Deuteronomy 6:6-7:

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Our failure to invest in teaching moments, in strengthening family bonds, has an inevitable consequence generationally.  Future generations of our family will forget the Lord.  We must do all in our power to avoid these spiritually destructive consequences.  We must heed the Lord’s warnings, such as in Exodus 20:5-6:

“For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love and keep my commandments.”

As we strive to keep our covenants with the Lord and teach our children righteous principles, we are laying the foundation for an endless posterity which will ove and serve the Lord.

Study joyfully and daily.  Brother Warnick.–
