Young Women Service Project
It’s that time of year again and The Young Women are teaming up with Samaritan’s Purse to send Christmas boxes to kids in 3rd world countries. The Young Woman did this service project last year and really enjoyed it so have decided to do it again. Your donations last year really helped us make this service project a success.
If you’re looking for ways to donate this Christmas Season this is a great opportunity. We are asking for donations for shipping the boxes and to help us fill the boxes with gifts for the kids. We have a goal of 50 shoeboxes. If you would like to donate to this cause please Venmo Sabrina Ward with donations.
(The cost of each box is about $25.)
We can’t wait to see where our boxes end up and to share our love of Christ with these kids.
Thanks for your support!

Thought of the Week

by Michael Cox

Hello Little Valley Brothers and Sisters,

This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying the First and Second Epistle General of Peter. These epistles was written to the overall Church membership living in northern Asia minor. Peter was encouraging them to remain faithfulness to the faith at a time when they were facing intense persecution, which the Apostle Simon Peter personally understood. For example, 2nd Peter is believed to have been written shortly before Peter’s martyrdom in Rome (see 2nd Peter 1:14) which tradition places to have happened in 66 AD. Despite Peter knowing that he would soon be following in the Savior’s footprints by being martyred (see John 21:18-19) these epistles are encouraging for the Christian believer, helping us understand that trials are temporary but the eternal inheritance and reward in the Celestial Kingdom with God and Jesus are, in fact, eternal. 1st Peter 1:3-9 has beautiful language where Peter talks of this inheritance given to us by “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1st Peter 1:3) and encourages us to have hope for the resurrection and a promise that this salvation comes through faith because of the mercy of God because of the atonement. Peter promises that “the trial of [our] faith… [is] more precious than… gold” (1 Peter 1:7) if our trial causes us to come closer to Jesus Christ.

Peter also encourages the reader to have charity for each other, as Jesus has charity for everyone (see, for example 1 Peter 4:1-3), including those who died without the gospel (see, for example 1 Peter 3:18-20 and 4:5-6), to remember that we are a chosen generation who have been entrusted with the royal priesthood of God (1 Peter 2:9), and that we should submit to earthly government (1 Peter 3:13-19, see also the 12th Article of Faith). Peter then warns us that while he was an eyewitness to Jesus Christ (see 2nd Peter 1:16-17), there were and are many false teachers and false prophets who will continue to deny Jesus, try to introduce heresies in the church, and eventually cause believers to fall away (see, for example, 2nd Peter 2:1-2 and 2nd Peter 3:17). Peter teaches us that the way we can avoid these false teachers is to hold fast to the scriptures which contain the “more sure word of prophecy” (2nd Peter 1:19) which will prove the testimony of Peter and all the other prophet and apostles (see 2nd Peter 1:20-21, also Genesis 40:8, Amos 3:7 and Doctrine and Covenants 1:38). This is why it is so important to have daily scripture study, individually and as a family. Sometimes scriptures are hard to understand. Peter acknowledges something that many of us have felt these last few months – Paul can be hard to understand (2nd Peter 3:15-16), yet the words of Paul and all other scripture, will bring us closer to Jesus Christ and understand His atonement, increase our faith in Jesus Christ, and help us be better people. I hope that each of us will strive each day to take time to be in the scriptures and to study the words of ancient and modern prophets so that we can understand the “more sure word of prophecy” and help those around us know of God’s love for them.
