Thought of the Week
by Michael H. Cox
This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying Helaman 7-12. These chapters takes place about 5-years before the birth of Jesus. After about 600-years of the more righteous Nephites sending missionaries to the more wicked Lamanites the Lord calls a Lamanite, named Samuel, to preach to the sicked Nephites in Zarahemla. Chapter 13:1 says “the Lamanites did observe strictly to keep the commandments of God”. After being rejected by the people, Samuel “was about to return to his own land” (Helaman 13:2). The Lord directs him back to the city where he gives powerful testimony of Jesus as well as prophecies concerning the birth and death of Jesus. He warns the people that, because of their wickedness, they will be destroyed and that “nothing can save this people save it be repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Helaman 13:6).
The message that Samuel taught and that most of the wicked Nephites rejected was all about Jesus. “We can place Jesus Christ at the center of teaching and learning by recognizing and emphasizing that He is the perfect example of all gospel principles. As disciples, we don’t just follow principles—we follow Jesus Christ. As we focus on the Savior’s perfect example, the Holy Ghost will testify of Him and inspire us to follow Him. (from Teaching in the Savior’s Way, https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/teaching-in-the-saviors-way-2022/04-part-1/05-teach-about-jesus-christ?lang=eng).
This week I read an article from the July 1978 Ensign Names of Christ in the Book of Mormon by Susan Ward Easton. In this article Sister Easton outlined 100-names of Jesus as found in The Book of Mormon and discussed how each of these difference names “signifies a different attribute or characteristic of the Lord and was used appropriately to coney the prophets’ recognition of who he is and what his mission represents.” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/1978/07/discovery/names-of-christ-in-the-book-of-mormon?lang=eng)
Our gospel study should teach us about Jesus and, as we learn about Jesus, we should attempt to emulate Him. As we strive to emulate Jesus by trying teach day to be a little better at loving God and our neighbor and giving meaningful service to all around us, we will become better disciples. God can then use us as His instruments to assist him as He “bring[s] to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39).
My hope is this week as we study the words of Jesus and His authorized servants we will recognize something new about Him that we can try to adopt into our own lives. By doing this we will become more like Him and then we can love those around us as He loves us and as He loves them.
