Thought of the Week
by Michael H. Cox
Hello Little Valley Ward friends,
This week for Come, Follow Me we are studying Helaman 1-6. In these chapters we read about political assassinations, religious apostasy, great missionary work, mighty miracles and many wars. We see clear details of the “pride cycle”. In many ways its almost like a mirror to our time. Much can be said about all of these. I want to, however, talk about Aminadab. Aminadab was an apostate Nephite living in the land of Nephi during a missionary journey of the brothers Nephi and Lehi, who were the sons of Helaman. In a dark moment he remembers the words that had previously been taught (over 40-years previously!) and that he likely believed at one point, and in that moment he told those around him to “repent, and cry unto the voice [of God], even until ye shall have faith in Christ” (Helaman 5:41). We don’t know God’s timing. When we have loved ones who leave the covenant path they may return. Let us love them and continue to be a good example for them and be ready to lovingly welcome them back to the fold. It may not be in mortal live, or it might be 40+ years later. We don’t know. What we do know is that “God is love” (1 John 4:8) and as we love others as He does we are emulating His perfect example. Even if they never return to the covenant path God’s love for them, and thus our love for them, should be unconditional and eternal.
This is our charge brothers and sisters, to love one another. “A new command I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:34-35).
