Thought of the Week

by Michael H. Cox

This week for Come, Follow Me we are study Helaman 7-12. The fast pace narrative that takes place in the early chapters of Helaman slows down the next couple of chapters where it covers in some detail teachings and prophecies of Nephi2. After returning from preaching, Nephi prays in his garden tower and a large group of people gather to listen to him. While preaching and calling to repentance the group gathered Nephi, by revelation from God, revealing the chief judge had been assassination and later the guilty party. This leads some to accept Nephi as a prophet although most people are wicked. Nephi receives the sealing power and calls for a 3-year famine, in an attempt to get the people to repent of their pride and return to following Jesus. Ultimately, after war and much death, the people repent, turn to God, and the famine ends in the 76th year of the reign of the judges. A mere 6-years later the people “began again to forget the Lord their God” (Helaman 11:36) in the 82nd year. Mormon describes this as “the unsteadiness of the hearts of the children of men” (Helaman 12:1). How much better are we as we follow Jesus and remain within the safety of His covenant path. The Lord can bless us and help us become the daughters and sons of God that He knows we can be. I hope this week we can find ways to serve those around us because as we serve others we serving God and through this meaningful service we can find peace and joy through being humble servants of God. This will help us remember God and be a steady disciple.

Last week in Gospel Doctrine, I mentioned how we can compare Nephi with Elijah and Samuel the Lamanite (who we will be studying about next week) with John the Baptist. You can download this comparison and use it in your study this week.

May each of us remember Jesus and our covenants with God this week and always.
