Thought of the Week

by John A Warnick

Our Beloved Brothers and Sisters:

“The future of this world has long been declared. The final outcome between good and evil is alreadyknown. There’s absolutely no question as to who wins because the victory has already been postedon the scoreboard. The only really strange thing in all of this is that we are still down here on the fieldtrying to decide which team’s jersey we want to wear.”—Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

What a Sabbath day!!! Hearing Elder Holland’s remarks and then re-dedicatory prayer of the St. George Temple was such a special experience.  As he challenged us to “personally re-dedicate” our lives, I’ve thought there’s no better way to start this re-dedicatory process than to recommit to faithfully reading and studying our Come Follow Me lesson materials each week.  This week we are in Revelation Chapters 6-14.

In Revelation the Apostle John uses the image of a key and alludes to the riches the Saints could access in their lives and the treasures of heaven they were putting up.  For example, in Rev. 2: 9 he writes: “I know thy words, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich)”. The Apostle is reminding us, and the early Saints, that no matter their earthly poverty, they were spiritually rich and with their good works were laying up treasures in heaven.

Revelation is like a Pirate's Treasure Chest

This brings back Pirates of the Caribbean images in my mind, you know, the big treasure chest full of pirate booty.  But what if that treasure chest were locked and you needed a key to get into it.  That’s a bit like our study of Revelation.  It’s locked, absolutely loaded with rich symbolism and messages for us.  It would be especially helpful if we could unlock Revelation now, when we are seeing the drama of the conflict between good and evil Elder Holland is talking about, play out on the world’s stage.  What is the key that will help up unlock the Book of Revelation and make it relevant to us in these latter days?

In his book Who Shall Be Able to Stand Dr. S. Michael Wilcox proposes a six notched key that will help us unlock the richness of Revelation.  I highly recommend this book to you.  But even more importantly, I want to boil down his six notches and help you get excited about applying them to your study this week.

Notch #1 – Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible.  It’s difficult to get an exact count, but I’ve seen one estimate suggesting there are over 500 differences between the King James Version of the Book of Revelation and the Joseph Smith Translation.  Look, for instance, at verse 17 in Chapter 11 of both the JST Book of Revelation and the King James Version.  The JST replaces the words “because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned” with the words “because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and thy reign is come.”  It’s a subtle but significant difference.  The JST emphasizes the imminent arrival of God’s reign. This change clarifies the timing of God’s reign, aligning it more closely with other prophetic language in Revelation.

Notch #2 – Modern Day Scriptures. The Doctrine & Covenants both interprets portions of The Book of Revelation and provides amplifying or parallel images of events the Apostle John is describing in Revelation.  For example, Section 77 of the D&C has multiple examples of clarifying interpretations of the symbolism in the Book of Revelation.  Sections 88 and 133 provide additional or clarifying detail for some of the apocalyptic imagery of The Book of Revelation.  The Book of Mormon, through Nephi and Ether contains fragments of John’s apocalyptic vision (see Ether chapter 13 and 1 Nephi chapter 14).  But Mormon and Moroni knew they weren’t to fully abridge the sealed portion of the plates which contain probably a very parallel vision to what John recorded for us in Revelation.  Nevertheless, the Book of Mormon provides rich reinforcement for the substance and some of the imagery that John uses.

Notch #3—Old Testament Allusions.  An allusion is a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, or thing of historical or cultural significance.  It’s used to give deeper meaning, almost like a shorthand method.  So, in Revelation we see numerous references to Old Testament persons, places, or events, but without explanation or deeper context.  It’s up to us to find that reference in the Old Testament to be able to fully comprehend how that piece fits into what on the surface might appear to be a big puzzle.

Notch #4 – Poetic Imagery.  The Four Horsemen and the Woman clothed with the Sun and the Dragon are two examples from this week’s  lesson materials of poetic imagery.  Approach these eight chapters with a sensitive awareness of the figurative language and symbolism, reminding yourself that not every in Revelation can or should be interpreted literally.

Notch #5 – Parallel Images.   Have you ever noticed how everything in the Book of Revelation seems to show up in pairs.  For instance, two women: a bride and a whore.  Two kingdoms: one for Christ, the other for Lucifer.  Two cities: a New Jerusalem and Babylon.  Two marks on the forehead.  We could go on and on.  One image will be symbolic of righteousness; the other is a counterfeit, perverted, cheapened imitation.  The purpose of looking for this duality is to find and cling to the righteous reality and reject Satan’s alluring counterfeit.

Notch #6 – Moral Warning or Encouragement.  It’s easy to get caught up in speculative fever when reading/studying the Book of Revelation.  As fascinating as it is to consider timelines, possible literal fulfillment of the apocalyptic vision, that’s not the key takeaway we want to be aiming for.  We should be focused on application, on opportunities for spiritual growth and heeding the warnings to prepare for the return of our Savior.  So always ask yourself, how can I strengthen my commitment to keep my covenants with the Lord to merit His protective mercy and be ready for the Lord’s second coming?

I once heard someone describe a conversation Pres. Wilford Woodruff had with Saints in California who were anxious to know if all the “signs of the times” they were seeing suggested the Savior’s second coming was imminent.  Pres. Woodruff urged them to continue planting “cherry trees”.  His point was members of the Church should not become overly fixated on speculating about the exact timing of the Second Coming but should instead focus on living faithful, productive lives, on honoring all our covenants with the Lord.

Sadly, we won’t get to go over all the significant lessons we’ll take away from our study this week.  It’s ward conference.  Here’s wishing you uplifting studies and we look forward to seeing you in Church on Sunday!!!
